The pilgrimage of 88 hallowed grounds in Shikoku, said to have developed by Kobo Daishi, or Kukai, about 1,200 years ago, is called “Ohenro.” Ryozen-ji is the first temple to visit in the pilgrimage covering some 1,400 kilometers in total, affectionately called “Ichiban-san,” and many pilgrims start their Ohenro from this temple.
