The pilgrimage of 88 hallowed grounds in Shikoku, said to have developed by Kobo Daishi, (Kukai), about 1,200 years ago, is called “Ohenro.” Ryozenji Temple is the first temple to visit in the pilgrimage covering some 1,400 kilometers in total, affectionately called “Ichiban-san”, or "Number One-san". Many pilgrims start their Ohenro journey from this temple.
