Mt. Washuzan Observatory (Great Seto Bridge)
Mt. Washuzan offers the best view of the picturesque Setonaikai National Park. It is a designated National Site of Scenic Beauty and is famous for ruins from the Paleolithic Age. Its name comes from its visual similarity to an eagle spreading its wings.
From the observatory, visitors can see the beauty of the Shimotsui island archipelago amidst the tranquil waters of the Seto Inland Sea, as well as the majestic sight of the Great Seto Bridge spanning the Bisan Seto islands.
The Great Seto Bridge is one of the bridges of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Project and directly connects Okayama Prefecture with Kagawa Prefecture. It was the first of three routes in the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Project and was opened on April 10, 1988.
The bridge spans the very center of the Seto Inland Sea and supports both a highway and a railway. Spanning a strait 9.4-km wide, it is actually a series of six bridges that include bridge types such as suspension, cable-stayed, and truss bridges, making it one of the world's largest series of bridges.
