The Oki Islands were formed several hundred million years ago, and they are now designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark site because of their unique ecosystem and culture that has carried on since ancient times.
The Kuniga Coast is one of Oki’s most well known scenic areas. The majestic sight of bluffs, sea cliffs and caves spanning about 7 km from east to west is truly amazing.
Of particular note is Matengai Cliff. This huge sea cliff rises 257 meters above the ocean, making it the tallest in Japan. Viewing the ocean down below from atop this cliff provides a grand scale that will make you feel tiny in comparison.

  • 32 minutes via Choei Bus departing Beppu Port bound for Kuniga

  • 1-3 hour sightseeing taxi tours which go to Kuniga Coast are available.
