Hiroshima Castle

Hiroshima Castle is a typical plains castle built by the warlord Mori Terumoto in the Sengoku period. During the Edo period, it became the base for the Fukushima and Asano clans. After the castle was completed, the keep was designated a National Treasure in 1931, but was destroyed by the atomic bomb. In 1958, the exterior was restored, and today it is a history museum that focuses on the theme of samurai culture. Due to deterioration and other issues, the keep will close to public access in March 2026, but you can still enjoy seeing the magnificent exterior.
The buildings of the Ninomaru (outer citadel), which were destroyed by the atomic bomb, were reconstructed over five years from 1989 using traditional construction methods. These include the Main Gate, the Gate Bridge, the Hira-Yagura, the Tamon-Yagura, the Taiko-Yagura, and the Western Wall. These will still be open to the public even after the keep closes.
In addition, the nearby multipurpose facility Sannomaru Hiroshima Castle is the place to experience the history and culture of Hiroshima, and enjoy Hiroshima cuisine.
